Every Friday, we feature a one-on-one Q&A with Japas, our resident curators: Maíra Kimura, Yumi Shimada, and Fernanda Ueno—founders of Japas Cervejaria. They will share their personal reflections on culture, travel, and the everyday moments including their connection to Japan.

Q: What place in Japan surprised you the most, and why?
Maíra: The place that surprised me the most in Japan was Tsukiji Market. Beyond the incredible fresh seafood I already expected, I discovered so many fascinating products, like wasabi roots, fresh and pickled cherry blossoms, shiso and other herbs, and countless other unique ingredients. I ate a giant oyster, had my first time trying toro, enjoyed matcha ice cream and Japanese craft beer. It was a delicious field research experience.
Fernanda: Okinawa really surprised me. I met so many people there who have never left the island in their entire lives, which was fascinating to me. There’s a strong sense of community and identity that feels very different from other islands I visited. The food was incredible, so unique and full of flavor, and the natural beauty of the beaches and landscapes completely took my breath away. It felt like a different side of Japan I wasn’t expecting.
